UBC Film Alumni Centenary Series I
Given another successful screening at the UBC Film Alumni Centenary Series and the completion of the website, I thought it would be fitting to post this link now: http://www.ubcfilmalumni.org/. Check the events tab to view the details of the final two screenings this year.
Double Happiness was screened with the director, Mina Shum, in attendance the other night. Â The last time I saw this film was in Social Studies 10, so it’s been a while. Â At the time I had no idea Mina Shum was a UBC Film Alumni. It was great to come to the realization that alumni films ARE being watched in school systems across Canada. Â Here’s scene from the movie:
The movie was pretty much as I remembered. A coming of age story of a woman, Sandra Oh, facing the pressures of her traditional Chinese family and western culture growing up in Vancouver. You really don’t see Vancouver portrayed in films often–it’s a nice treat when you get to watch it on the big screen. Sandra Oh doesn’t often get roles like this anymore.
The next film is Dylan Akio Smith’s Cabin Movie. Its about three couples who travel to a cabin, attempt to re-spark their relationships with each other through unconventional methods and have everything go wrong. It is a great concept for a movie and I liked it very much. Come out to check it out on May 20th at the Vancity Theatre, if you are are free. The screening includes a reception before and afterwards with free drinks and food. There’s no reason not to be there. Check out this clip:
See you there.
